The Spring to Grover Bird Watches
Lovers watch their spring
Grover goes bird watching
The Spring (Shakespearean sonnet)
It sang of memories as lovers played
This spring which brings sweet music to their heart
And wanders from where kisses have their start
Of lovers once found dancing in the glade
-
Each hope fulfilled in dreams beside the spring
As lover watched imagination drift
Here safely far away from raging rift
Where even love has not learned how to sting
-
Here by the spring mere time still saunters by
For other dawns await to greet their sun
While other tales await to be unspun
A lasting sip before eyes wonder why
-
One day two lovers resting by the tide
Still see the spring they carry deep inside
The eternal spring flows on as two more lovers are caught in its currents in this Shakespearean sonnet. The sonnet describes a magic spring. It isn't until the very end (the rhyming couplet) that we discover the spring's course. Also note: the spring is mentioned in every stanza. This was to signify that the spring is ever present.
The spring was very much alive in Arlene and me. It took on a new course during our parenting years. It was my fault and my idea. Though we were encouraged to take a little time for ourselves by Arlene's mother and Arlene's brother and his wife, I felt we should be with our children until they were grown up. I felt we should postpone Arlene and Martin in favor of the Kloess family. The time came. The kids had grown up. This "genius" had a "great" idea. In our early teenage courting years Arlene and I used to enjoy and go to the classic more (the opera. symphonies, ballets and such). So, I was convinced we revisit those magic years. I got tickets for Phillip Glass's opera "Satyagraha" and reservations at Lehr's Steak House. A big step up from Doggie Diner, where those teenagers ate (now gone). Before we went out, Arlene put on a fashion show of some of the old outfits she saved. She hadn't changed (in a lover's eye's). The evening went smoothly. But smoothly was the best that could describe it. The opera and Lehr's were great, but there was something incomplete. Before heading home Arlene wanted to go out dancing. She had heard about a new salsa dance club, the Cafe Cocomo. So off we went. The Cafe Cocomo (now closed) was an indoor, outdoor dance club. With Arlene in my arms the evening's purpose was complete. The past was great, but here comes tomorrow.
We have all heard that we shouldn't dwell in our memories. For many, memories are all they have. How important it is in life to make great memories. Great to us. Great to our heart, our soul. our being. For some, one grand dream is all they can expect, all they need. Imagine one event that is the purpose of a life. It is possible. It does happen. Then there is the future, to test the value of that event. The temptations. The lies. Then there is the many who should go on to make more memories or to find or to create that moment(s). How will we know that we have fulfilled our purpose? I believe the answer is with us all. Now here is the great riddle: There are so many wonders in this world. We are only here once. We were not meant to do nothing, even if we have accomplished our dream(s). The answer to the riddle is different for every individual. We are the greatest wonder of all. Memories are stepping stones for the future. And most importantly, Enjoy.

We love life, not because we are used to living
but because we are used to loving.
