A Person Died Today to The Floor Is Lava
A Fiery reminder
A fiery reality

A Person Died Today (Poem)

He died today twas no one there
And not a sole his cross to bear
Alone forgotten by his heirs
This silent child without a care
-
No one to weep or mourn his loss
No glimpse or hint of memories lost
No rose nor any idol gloss
Into a fire this thing we tossed
-
To see to feel a life thus earned
To see the long forgotten urn
To this I pray reflections churn
To this his pyre I too might burn
-
I wipe my hands and walk away
It was not me who died that day
If so are those will proudly say
Thats Martin Kloess who came this way
-
And some will weep and some will cry
And others dance as I go by
And some may take a chance to try
And some may take a comfort sigh
-
A lesson if you did not know
To take your life and make it glow
My lifes a seed for you to sow
And in the end your light will flow

A person died and a person lives make up this poem. This poem uses a very subtle signal to mark a change. In the third and fifth stanza a minor ostinato is used: "To" in the third. "And" in the fifth. The changes are: the poem moves from a person to me to us.

The Masonic funeral is a set performance of words all set to memory. It takes about 8 to 12 minutes to perform. I performed 147 Masonic funerals from 1999 to 2010. The strangest one was this one. I get a phone call from a funeral director that a Mason had died. Could I perform the funeral? I got my friend, David, to be the chaplain, The day of the funeral, at the funeral parlor, only the director was there. After some time the wife and her nurse arrived. The wife was completely incoherent. David and I waited for anyone else to show up. When the nurse said the wife had to return to the care home we decided to proceed. I remember all those empty seats. The only ones there were David and I, the wife, her nurse and the dead man. As I performed the funeral the wife began to talk to me. I worked her idle chatter into my performance. When I was done, the nurse thanked David and I and took the wife out. As David and I left there were the man's two sons.

The shadow of that day lives within me. To have a funeral and not even one's sons attends. To have lived a whole life and there is no one to wish one fair well. It is so sad. Then look at what life did with this picture. We have a man who died and no one attended his funeral. We have a wife who mentally was protected from the moment. We have a funeral director who went above and beyond his job. We have nurse who had to care and speak for her charge. We have two volunteers who performed the service. We have two sons. We have people. We have lives. We have lessons. Life has given me a lesson, a gift. What gifts has life given us, Isn't life wonderful? Aren't we wonderful? Take in life's lessons and Enjoy.

A new fiery fun

In 2010 we had "icing." Then came "planking." Then, of course, the infamous ice bucket challenge. If Snapchat and Instagram are any indication, this summer's hottest viral prank might have been the "lava challenge." It's a simple game. A friend shouts "the floor is lava!" and we have exactly 5 seconds to get to higher ground. This could mean climbing a store shelf, hopping on a fire hydrant or jumping on the counter of a fast-food restaurant. The game itself has been around on schoolyards for years. We might remember it from our childhood.
